Top 5 Comics based on video games

Video games have been based on comics, since the start. Well since 1979 with the Atari 2600 superman game. Some are remembered as classics like Batman arkham asylum, and others are not so much. What about the other way around, when comics are based on video games. Here are my five favourite ones, none are based on games that are based on comic book characters, such injustice or the arkham series. There is no mangas either that is for a video for another day.

Number 5 Withblade/Tomb raider crossovers. It is no secret that I love the top cow universe, this includes withblade and it’s bearer Sara Pezzini. Having her ally with Lara Croft is dream made in heaven. Written by Dave Wohl and Art by Micheal Turner. We see Sara coming to Lara’s aid when someone steals the idol of bastet. Adventure and action ensue with shooting, monsters, and the supernatural. This was the first graphic novel I ever bought. Being written and drawn by major creators from Top cow really gives it a seal of quality.

Number 4 Sonic the Hedgehog

Originally published by Archie comics, now under the IDW banner, so it has been written and drawn by various creators, since its debut in 1993. In 2008 Sonic the hedgehog entered the Guinness book of world records as the longest running comic series based on a video game. Then in 2015 became the longest running franchise comic after beating Marvels conan the barbarian. So it would be remiss of me if I didn’t add it to the list, because of those reasons. The stories set themselves around sonic and friends as they fight dr Robotnik. In newer issues, there has been a number of character additions. Currently still going and available.

Number 3 Mortal kombat x.

Do you like violence and gore? Of course, you do, who doesn’t. I obviously meant in video game form. DC comics published the Mortal Kombat X comic back in 2015. Written by Shawn Kittelsen and Art by Dexter Soy and ran for 12 issues. The best part of this comic series where it keeps the over the top violence yet adds a deep story where every character is given depth and meaning. The centre of the story is scorpion, and his own issues of being the once spectre of vengeance and the atrocities he committed under shang tsungs rule. All your favourite characters get their time to shine in the series Absolutely fantastic. The art is great, and the story is a lot of fun.

Number 2 World of Warcraft.

Originally published under the wildstorm imprint, then went to dc, and now being reprinted by blizzard themselves. There is the main story about king Varian from his rediscovery to him reclaiming the throne. Written by Walter Simonson and art by Ludo Lullabi. The art of mainstory is very similar to the games art style, with bright colours. Then the story of World of warcraft is further expanded upon in the other mini series that were published after. The art style changes with each story. They all remain constant in quality. My favourite the curse of the worgen, anything about werewolves makes happy. The fact they reprinted these makes it even better and they are not to expensive either.

Number 1 Blood bourne

The souls games have become infamous for being hard, and I enjoy playing them. My favourite of all is blood bourne. It’s Victorian aesthetic, the great looking monsters and challenging gameplay. The comic is just as good, its dark, gloomy and is very much based on the game. It is insanely meta of how much the blood bourne comics are. Including the you died screen, and creating a lore reason for the large amounts of death. Pubished by titan comics. There is so much cool stuff, including a very Lovecraftian themed ending to the first graphic novel. The death of sleep, the end is inspired by the shadow over innsmouth. The hunter has to look after a child with pale blood, it has the power to destroy the monsters. The art is dark, and the story is dark. Great for fans of the game and horror. The first runs were written by Ales Kot, and Art by Piotr Kowalski, currently its being written by Cullen Bunn. The author of the fantastic Deadpool kills the universe.
