Time for forge world to end

I have been thinking about horus heresy and forge world a lot lately. It is the better value product from games workshop but it also feels limiting too. With models being upto 50% cheaper than their 40k counterparts, and some models having use in both systems. Such as the firstborn marines. The age of darkness is the cheapest way to have a 2000 point space marine army for 40k. Horus heresy is good if you want to play space marines. Anything else is massively paywalled with forge world prices. There is a massive difference between not being able to afford, and not being able to justify a £100 on a primarch model. Especially when it is only a 25% difference in price between both mortarions and daemon mortarion was about in the siege of terra. That the forge world Guilliman is nearly twice the price of games workshops. Games workshops models in these examples are the far superior. Someone at forgeworld saw the new ultramarine primarch and thought, how are we going to sell our shitty version now? Looking at those models alone shows forge world is there so people can say I got my model from forge world. Look if you want to do that more power to you. That alone isn’t justification for it’s existence.

The other problem with forge world some models are not that far priced from games workshop. Take the alpha legion praetor £27.50, the new plastic praetors are £20, with out being legion specific. A chapter or legion specific hq for a space marine such as the black templar marshal is £22, and primaris captains are £25. So, forge world can and do produce models at a price comparable to game workshop. Then completely go mental with something like the alpha legion exodus at nearly £40. There is zero justification for this. Who ever priced the alpha legion praetor, must have stopped huffing paint that day, or got fired.

What should gw do, before they take forgeworld behind the shed and give it the old yeller treatment? First all new horus heresy should just be plastic. Not resin, no selling for almost double the price because resin or reasons both fit here. Games workshop are the ones that say they sell rules makes sense to have models use as many rules . All of the new models can easily be used in both horus heresy and 40k. The esoterist is a librarian or sorcerer depending of allegiance. Dark angels have had their own unique terminators since forever, so giving the other chapters the same with upgrade sprues, isn’t to far out the question. Next start transferring the best selling models to plastic and lowering the price with it, like they did with the leviathan dreadnought. Same with the units, and upgrade sprues. The big models and tanks, should be made to order. With some being just plastic upgrade kits for existing models. Such as the stormraven, to create the stormeagle release the upgrade in box like they did with the baneblade or separately to create the model. There is plenty of other models they can do this with too.

As for the rules as forgeworld is only firstborn for space marines, in future do two space marine codices. One primaris and one first born. This will do two things. It will show games workshop which are more popular and give players the choice of what time period they want to play. 30k or 40k with out being stuck in narrative constraints. Bit of both of for tournament players too. See right now if I want to use my sicarian in a 40k battle I need an extra book just to play it. Having a dedicated first born codex will make army building easier, and I am more likely to buy more.

With the old world coming soon, and the rumours it’s going to be mainly forge world is going to stymie the game even before it is out of the gate. Look at the games that do so much better when they are more removed from forgeworld. Aeronautica imperalis the model prices are so much lower, for the exact same quality, the ork air waagh megabomber is £73, and it’s not that big. The thunderhawk from gw is £30, which means you can get two of those and have change, instead of the ork craft. In plastic it would be far cheaper and sell more. As in more to cover the profit the resin one would make. Lets go back to horus heresy for a second, that age of darkness box is there for this edition.
