Kings of War War in The Holds Tabletop gaming Review
Whether you like it or not, games workshop has some serious competition now. One of the biggest is mantic. They have many games divided into two main universes. Kings of war and firefight, the usual fantasy and sci-fi. Today I am going to look at the kings of war starter set war in the holds. War in the holds comes with the goblin and ratkin forces, with a whopping 86 miniatures. These are 40 goblin infantry, goblin, 3 trolls, 40 ratkin infantry, ratkin warlock, and finally a ratkin night terror. The rule book is the into gamer edition. I have already done a comparison with the dominion box. So this is a review.
The models look really nice, I especially like the goblin wiz. With his Hadouken stance, it is full of character and a fun model. There is a lot of detail. From the scrolls, to warts on the nose. The other leader is the rat kin warlock. Again a finely detailed model. With the warlock looking kind of buff.
The infantry models, come with bits to make different units. With the goblins you can make, rabble, 144-page and sharp sticks. The Goblins also have mawpups. The head designs are so fun. With one goblin head wearing a bucket. Because more units need good boys. The ratkin can make spear warriors and normal warriors. Finally you have the big models, the trolls and the night terror. Once again lovely designs, with lots of personalities.
These models are so much fun to paint.
The models are made with different materials, the leaders are resin, the infantry is PVC and larger models are hard plastic. So super glue for the hard plastic and resin. PLastic glue for the PVC.
The rule book is just that, a rule book. It contains the rules for fourteen of the factions. Unfortunately, the ratkin is not counted among them. They do include the rules for the force in the getting started booklet. Bit of a pain, and feels like an oversight more than anything, else but seeing as the rules are free to download too. There is no real issue. Like I said an oversight.
So what is it like to play, kings of war is pretty simple? The stat lines are intuitive. Ra is Ranged, Me is melee. With value being shown like 4+. So you know what would be the minimum score you would need. The three phases, are movement, ranged, and melee. So spells are used in the ranged phase and the same rules apply as if it was shooting.
Kings of war is a great game for fantasy lovers. It is cheaper than games workshops but in no way a budget alternative. A good quality game with excellent sculpts, that is easy to pick up. At an 80 pound price tag, more than 80 models. With ability to use the models to ally with each other. Too so you can take 25% of the one you like the least and add them to your favourite to play test them too.
A great buy, worth every penny.
