HOW TO BUILD AN INQUISITION FORCE FOR WARHAMMER 40,000

In celebration of the inquisitor rule book lore being available on warhammer vault I wanted to look at the warhammer 40k faction that gets the least love on the table top is the inquisition. Yes you can do an assassin execution force and they had a codex imperial agents in seventh. Yet it did not cover the sheer versatiity of that this faction is capable of. A faction that can include the majority of the imperium's forces. Characters that can usurp the command of pretty much everyone even chapter masters. It got me thinking, how would you build such an army? I make no secret of my love of soup armies, with my current project being a just north of 10,000 points return to Armegeddon force. Which includes Deathwatch, Sisters of Battle, Imperial Guard, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, and Black Templars to name but a few.

Back to the question of how to make an inquistion force. The easiest way is adding an inquisitor to your sisters of battle, grey knight, or deathwatch force. You have your ordo hereticus, malleus, or xenos respectfully force. Easy peasy, but then you can add an inquisitor to any imperium force and say the same. I want a proper inquistion army something that when played people will see it is for what it is. The first issue you'll notice it won't be a battle forged army and is used for narrative games.

The unit choices, Hq can be pretty much any from the imperium, with a few additions to give it an inquisitor look, if needed. One of my inquisitors is Ripper Jackson, she looks fantastic and shouldn't just be a Catachan sgt. Your warlord will dictate some of what you can include in this army. If you have an Inquisitor that is ordo xenos, which means you can use deathwatch, but not grey knights or sisters of battle. This mostly narrative consistency and should not stop you using what you want. Named characters should only be inquisitors.

The other units should be anything that has the imperium keyword with a few exceptioins. Custodes are meant to only answer to the Emperor, Dark Angels and Space Wolves have strong dislike of the inquisition. These would be difficult to add and remain lore friendly. Black templars love the inquisition so they would be a great choice for some units, and if we go with the Helsreach book you could easily justify a Black templar, Sisters of Battle, and imperial guard army. An example would be Lord Kazmazov as hq Primaris Black templar crusde squads and tempestus scions for your troops, fast attack could be space marine bikes, zeraphim, and sentinels, elites the four assassins, repentia and terminators, finally heavy support imperial guard tanks, they are strong and numerous. It is a nice mix of all three armies, with a book to supprt the choices. Inquisitors can also use any imperium transport.

The flyers are my favourite part of any 40k army. They look cool. For pure cool factor I would pick one with a transport capacity. The corvus darkstar is a great look mini and is covered in Inquisition iconography so it is fitting. If it wasn't the fact its deathwatch, so part of a different ordos. Don't let that stop you. If we are going with the force so far, we still have a number of choices. Valkeries are the best looking and have that transport capacity too. Kazmazov can't embark in the valkerie it's just amazing looking mini. Storm raven and the other space marine flyers look good, and of course as a wild card the adeptus mechanicus archeoraptor variants. Remember you can include a flyer for every thousand points.

Lords of war, knights are an obvious choice, I personally like warglaives strong melta weapons, chainswords, and fast. Baneblade variants are pretty cool too. The lord of war is the one you think looks best as your centre piece. For narrative persons of the force I have been talking about it would say baneblade. It fits with the imperial guard tanks in the heavy support, and the stormlord could be used as a transport too.

There you have it an inquisition army that has consistency with a solid narrative, and a well loved novel as a source. Of course the units can be changed to what you like. There is a number of books that can be used as inspiration for your inquisition force. Imperial armour siege of vraks, for krieg, red scorpions, and grey knights. Finally there is the indomitus crusade if you want to use space marines, adeptus custodes, and sisters of silence. There is also the numerous books about inquisitors by Dan Abnett namely the two longest series Eisenhorn and Ravenor
