When games workshop rises prices the internet is alight with ire and bile. Yet if games workshop lowers prices nothing. That's because they never lower prices right? Well with the latest horus heresy release, firstborn space marines have had a significant price drop. I will only use the games workshop website for prices, and compare them as closely to 40k firstborn space marine kits.
The first is the HQ choices, the twin pack of praetor and chaplain costs £32.50, making them £16.25 each. The firstborn space marine chaplain alone is £21 and a space marine captain in terminator armour well the death watch one is £18 a total together of £39. So getting the horus heresy hq box will save you £6.50 a 16% saving from the start.
next is your troop choice, twenty mark iii, iv, and vi are all £47.50 each. A tactical squad is £32.50, for 10, that makes £65 for 20. The horus heresy box will net you a £17.50 or 27% saving.
heavy support and elites, to make devastators and sternguard marines you will need to purchase the upgrade boxes at £26. Even that does not make the price higher than their own boxes. The horus heresy marines and the upgrade box is £73.50, the devastator box is £35 for 5 that makes £140 for twenty. The horus heresy version will net you a £66.50 or 47.5% saving, and as for sternguard boxes. They are £36 for 5, £144 for the same amount as horus heresy. So the new horus hersy special weapons squads, will ave you £70.50 or 48.9% saving. Those are just insane savings. If you just want two squads of each, you will still save £42.50, and that is buying one of each upgrade boxes too. It also is a saving if you just do one tactical marine squad, a devastator squad, and one sternguard squad.
The diemos rhino is the cheapest at £28, the space marine rhino is £30, and the sisters of battle rhino a whopping £35. The diemos rhino is newer than the sisters of battle and can be used for three armies too.
The kratos superheavy tank is the cheapest one at £75, £15 cheaper than the baneblade at £90. I mention this to emphasise the price drop is beyond infantry.
finally named characters, these arre usually the higher priced items the space wolf character giegor fell hand is £19, whereas wolf lord krom is £20, and Ulrik the slayer is £21. So a named character is cheaper, the exception is njal stormcaller is the cheapest at £17.
So with the release of the new predator coming soon. It looks like it will be the cheaper one too. I hope so. If you are looking to do a 40k space marine army. Using the horus heresy models and their upgrades, will save you a lot of money. At times almost 50%. With loads of kitbashng options too. With many spare bits.
